Fall Protection Solutions

Fall Protection Specialists

Fall protection systems are essential to a proactive safety culture, fostering a secure, productive, and compliant workplace. CSG's solution experts promote OSHA fall protection regulations to help construction management, architects, building owners, and facility managers prevent accidents and avoid costly and reputation-damaging Cal-OSHA citations.

OSHA Fall Protection Standards

A fall protection plan is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Fall Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1926, Subpart M. This ensures that individuals working at heights are protected from falling by the use of guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems.

Fall Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1926 Requirements

Workers have the right to safe and healthful working conditions. The following precautions must be included in any fall protection plan.

  • Employees are protected when they are 6 feet or above a lower level.

  • Employees are protected from falls and also from any falling objects.

  • Work surfaces must be examined and deemed structurally safe.

When conventional fall protection is not possible or might create a greater hazard, a written plan addressing fall protection issues must meet these requirements:

  • Must be in writing, site-specific, or by style/model and must maintained on site.

  • It must be prepared by a qualified person and maintained by a competent person.

  • Must include all measures addressing fall hazards.

Tasks and work areas that require fall protection include:

  • Framework and reinforcing steel

  • Hoist Areas when an employee may fall six (6) feet or more

  • Holes (including skylights) that are six (6) feet or more above lower levels

  • Constructing a leading edge six (6) feet or more above lower levels

  • Overhead bricklaying or related work six (6) feet or more above the lower level

  • Erecting or grouting precast concrete members six (6) feet or more above the lower level

  • Performing residential construction six (6) feet or more above the lower level

  • Roofing activities on low and steep slope roofs with unprotected sides and edges six (6) feet or more above lower levels

  • Working on, at, above, or near wall openings when the outside bottom edge of the wall opening is six(6) feet or more above lower levels or more above lower levels and the inside bottom edge of the wall opening is less than 39
    inches above the walking/working surface.

  • Using ramps, runways, and other walkways six (6) feet or more above the lower level
